Jorge Alabe's Grupo Samba Rio

Brazilian percussion master Jorge Alabe directs a Rio-style samba Bateria called "Grupo Samba Rio". Hands down, this is the best instruction you'll find in the entire Bay Area (and possibly anywhere outside of Brazil) for how to really play samba from Rio.

Originally, Jorge taught a series of workshops where we would learn both pagode and samba, but since the fall of 2005 and beyond, we've been focusing exlusively on samba. Bateria Lucha members have been some of the core participants in Grupo Samba Rio, and we're proud to help spread the word about this incredible opportunity in the Bay Area to learn from some of the real masters.

Grupo Samba Rio rehearses every Sunday night from 5:00pm to 7:30pm at the International Capoeira Angola Center in West Oakland. The first hour is a beginning class, and the rest is for intermediate/advanced players. We list all Grupo Samba Rio-related events in our calendar. If you create an account on the BateriaLucha.org website, you'll be able to signup for Grupo Samba Rio events through here, so we can know if you're coming, help provide instruments and rides if you need them, etc.
