Maracatú is a processional style of music and dance from the state of Pernambuco in the northeast of Brazil. It's got deep roots and infectious, joyous rhythms. You'll learn alfaia (the bass drum at the heart of maracatú), caixia (snare), gongué (bell), abé (shekere), body percussion, songs, stretches, and more. This is a beginner's class -- no experience is necessary, and instruments will be provided.

This will be part of a series of workshops to prepare participants for the annual Dia de los Muertos Parade in the San Francisco Mission on Sunday November 2nd. If you want to join us and play maracatu that night, you need to attend at least 3 of the regular Tuesday night workshops before the parade.

$15 drop-in, or $40 for a card valid for 4 workshops.
