Maracatú is a processional style of music and dance from the state of Pernambuco in the northeast of Brazil. It's got deep roots and infectious, joyous rhythms. Maracatú Luta is offering a four week introductory workshop to share our love of this amazing music. You'll learn alfaia (the bass drum at the heart of maracatú), caixia (snare), gongué (bell), abé (shekere), body percussion, songs, stretches, and more. This is a beginner's class -- no experience is necessary, and instruments will be provided. $15 drop-in, or $40 for the whole four week series. | ||

On-going workshops and rehearsals will continue in September, after a 2 week break for California Brazil Camp. Also look out for a special Bay Area maracatú workshop in early September with master drummer Jorge Martins from Recife, Brazil (one of the faculty at Brazil Camp). | ||
