Jorge will be out of town, and Derek is probably unavailable this week, which means Marcel and Deborah will hopefully be leading the workshop.
Hey all -
Some of you have made it to Bruce's parties in the past, and it's been fun - an eclectic mix of people. He's invited us to play some samba before it gets too late in the evening. I will be leading since Derek will be unavailable. Please sign up asap to ensure that we have quorum!!
Lucha will play at 8:30 or 9. We should be done playing by 10 p.m. as it's a "school night".

Regular Bateria Lucha workshop where you'll learn maracatu, afoxe/ijexa, and other rhythms from Brazil (especially the north-eastern state of Pernambuco).
This week, we'll be focusing on material for the Day of the Dead parade in San Francisco happening the next day.
$10 and up sliding scale for the 2 hour class. No one turned away for lack of funds.
Every year in SF, there's a march through the Mission to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Hadley and I talked about joining forces to play some maracatu, afoxe, and other rhythms (possibly a bembe arrangement for a bunch of Cuban songs, etc). I don't have the exact details yet, but it'd be something like meeting at 6:30pm at a taqueria on 24th st. near Byrant. The official procession would march down Bryant to 25th, up to the Mission Cultural Center, back down 24th, and end up at some park. Not a huge route, but it'll go pretty slow, so it'll probably take up most of the evening.
Update on details and logistics:
Please wear ALL WHITE. No logos or khaki. Warm weather is expected.
We are meeting at 5:45 at this Restaurant: "Farolito Taqueria"
2950 24th St. between Alabama and Harrison (2 blocks from Bryant)

Mestre Jorge Alabe will be teaching a workshop presenting dances of the orishas, in the Brazilian Candomble tradition on Saturday, November 10, 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
The workshop will be held at Mission Cultural Center in San Francisco (2868 Mission St., between 24th and 25th Streets). The price for the workshop is $15. All levels welcome.
Please be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to study authentic orisha dance steps if you are interested in this tradition. This is likely to be the only orisha workshop Jorge will be presenting before next year.
In the past, similar classes have focused on dance, but there was also some limited instruction in drumming and songs for the orixas. The workshop will certainly be accompanied by live musicians.
The new home for our regular Thursday workshops, the Buena Vida Dance Club, is having it's grand opening party on Saturday, November 10th. We've been invited to play music, encourage people to come, dance, check out the different instructors there, etc. The idea is that we'd perform some of our own thing -- mostly maracatu, and maybe some afoxe and something in 12/8. We'd also play a set of samba and samba reggae for Serena and some of Maisa's dancers who are doing a performance, as well. They're aiming to have all the official performances between 7pm and 9pm, but the exact schedule is still up in the air.
Obviously, no one would be expected to stay for the entire party, but if folks could signup and in the note indicate if you're at least free from 7-9pm. If you can only make part of those 2 hours, indicate which part so I can try to request that we either play earlier or later in that window of time, if neccessary. Thanks!

NOTE: This is the last time Jorge will be teaching until after Carnival in Brasil, so this is your last chance to study directly with the master until sometime in February.
