Regular Bateria Lucha workshop where we'll be working on Maracatu and other arrangements applied to the Maracatu instruments (alfaias, caixias, gongue, etc). Timbals are also welcome.  This will be our first workshop in our new location!

$10 and up sliding scale for the 2 hour class. No one turned away for lack of funds.

If you are driving and can meet at 6:30pm at our house to help haul gear, that'd be great. I'm discussing the possibility of renting locker space at the studio to store a bunch of instruments there, which would be ideal, but meanwhile, we'll have to bring everything ourselves.

Turkish and Greek melodies mingle with Spanish bulerías and Cuban rhythms. Indian ragas and Middle Eastern grooves weave into a rich musical tapestry. Medieval musical forms appear alongside odd meter improvisations. Sharing a love for music from around the world, our improvisations are inspired by a sense of the present moment and space in which we find ourselves, making each performance unique and alive.

We need to haul a lot of gear for the anti-war march. We should aim to get on MacArthur BART at 9:05am, which means getting to our house at 8:30am SHARP so that we can get things loaded into a few cars and head over to BART (which is thankfully pretty close to our place). If you're coming from the East Bay, it'd be a huge help if you could lend a hand with this task, so please sign up. However, if you're *not* going to show up and help, don't sign up. ;) Better to be honest than to have me expecting you and then you don't show up. Thanks!

This will be the 40th anniversary of a historic march on the Pentagon demanding an end to the Vietnam war. 40 years later, and the U.S. military is bogged down in an even more disasterous occupation. Active duty troops are resisting the war in growing numbers. A clear majority of the U.S. supports withdrawing the troops. However, the stakes are way too high for the U.S. empire to admit defeat and leave, so it's going to take significantly more pressure and action from our side. By continuing to demonstrate, we give confidence to other people that they, too, should move from passive opposition to active resistance. We also support the growing movement of active duty GIs and vets that are against the occupation, since those are the people with the real power to stop the war machine.

Bateria Lucha is honored to have been invited to play on stage at the Labor Rally before the main event, and to lead the Labor "feeder march" over to the Civic Center. So, people who are going to be performing with us need to get to the San Francisco Federal Building by 9:45am so we can get ready before the rally starts at 10:30. After the (short) Labor rally, we'll march (basically around the corner) to the main Civic Center rally site, helping to lead the Labor contingent in chants and songs.

Hey all -

Some of you have made it to Bruce's parties in the past, and it's been fun - an eclectic mix of people. He's invited us to play some samba before it gets too late in the evening. I will be leading since Derek will be unavailable. Please sign up asap to ensure that we have quorum!!

Lucha will play at 8:30 or 9. We should be done playing by 10 p.m. as it's a "school night".

Every year in SF, there's a march through the Mission to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Hadley and I talked about joining forces to play some maracatu, afoxe, and other rhythms (possibly a bembe arrangement for a bunch of Cuban songs, etc). I don't have the exact details yet, but it'd be something like meeting at 6:30pm at a taqueria on 24th st. near Byrant. The official procession would march down Bryant to 25th, up to the Mission Cultural Center, back down 24th, and end up at some park. Not a huge route, but it'll go pretty slow, so it'll probably take up most of the evening.

Update on details and logistics:

Please wear ALL WHITE. No logos or khaki. Warm weather is expected.

We are meeting at 5:45 at this Restaurant: "Farolito Taqueria"
2950 24th St. between Alabama and Harrison (2 blocks from Bryant)
