The Mission Cultural Center, Omulu Capoeira, and Fogo Na Roupa will be collaborating for the creation of a community event in rememberance of our beloved Mestre Carlos Aceituno on the first anniversary of his passing.

The event will be held Thursday, Sept 27th 5-9pm at the Mission Cultural Center. There will be an open roda, candle making, the creation of an altar, live bateria and dancers.

We are inviting the entire community to participate. The doors are open for all to share! There will be time alotted for open mic but if you would like a slot in the program for a dedication, please contact Metziquez@aol. com.

Update (2007-09-23): I recently found out that my uncle Kelley was killed in an accident at the factory where he worked. So, I'm flying out of town Monday morning and won't return until late Saturday night. So, unfortunately, that means I won't be able to help direct any maracatu at this event and say anything for Carlos, as I had originally hoped. I would be thrilled if Luchistas who knew Carlos still attended, and if someone wanted to still invoke the memory of marching together with him and some of the people from Fogo on May 1st, 2006, that would make me very happy. As both Carlos and Kelley's deaths remind me: life is incredibly fragile, and we really have to enjoy it and make the most of it while we still can. Let their memories be a blessing, and inspire us to celebrate and respect each other.

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm

I have decided to cancel our regular Maracatu workshop this evening so that myself and any other Luchistas who want to can attend the Velada for Carlos Aceituno the Mission Cultural Center in SF.

I've been trying to get in touch with the organizers for that event to see if there would be time for us to dedicate a little maracatu to Carlos. No promises yet, but please signup for the event if you'd like to come, and hopefully we can get a quorum together to play. Certainly there will be a lot of samba reggae and samba, anyway, so if folks wanted to come to play that, you'd be more than welcome...
