I haven't been able to confirm the actual community center in Mosswood Park yet, but I can't stand it anymore. So, I'm going to schedule a few rehearsals anyway. If we get the community center, great. If not, we'll just do it outside (given that it's summer now, weather and light shouldn't be too much of a problem).

The plan should be to meet promptly at our house, and then carry the neccessary gear over to the park together.

Emphasis will be on alfaias and other maracatu instrumentation and material...

Another July 4th parade in Bolinas with the Sons and Daughters of Orpheus. The parade starts at 11 and goes through the small town of Bolinas and then onto the beach.

Possible opportunity to stay over in Bolinas on the nights of the 3rd (so you'll wake up ready to go for the morning parade) and/or 4th (so you can party down all afternoon and evening and then sleep it off before you have to get home).

Also, we're hoping to recruit more dancers, so if you'd like to come to dance or bring a dancer, that would be great.

There will be two rehearsals for the drumming: June 18 and June 26. These are Sons and Daughters of Orpheus rehearsals to which Luchistas are invited, not Lucha rehearsals.

Here are more details from Michelle, Lucha's only Bolinas resident and a long-time organizer of Brazilian music and dance at this event:

  • Hi everybody,

Yes, it's time once again to do our really fun, hometown parade in Bolinas!

hey everyone-- this coming friday, july 20, Rainforest Action Network, aka Levana is teaming up with a group of high school students for the Clean Climate Carnival. there will be street theater and clowning around 5-6 Citibank locations in the financial district. and WE NEED MUSIC!!!! sorry for the late posting. I'm trying to get just 3-4 musicians to make some kind of noise for our parade.

We will be gathering at the RAN office (221 Pine St. 5th Floor, SF, near Montgomary BART- call levana at 415-572-2592 if you need more info) at 11:30 in our blues and greens and then parading and clowning it up at 5-6 CITI locations near our office. At each CITI branch/office we will watch as the clean climate clowns rebel against their citibank ringmaster and teach him a thing or two about funding climate change.

This will be a family affair with balloons and face paints. Come for as long as you wish, and wear and bring whatever you wish however blues and greens and and submitting to face paint would be most appreciated.

I'm hoping to do regular Thursday night Lucha rehearsals between now and Brazil Camp. Unfortunately, I've got a gig with Grupo Samba Rio the same night starting at around 10pm in the Mission, so I'm going to have to end rehearsal promptly, get home, swap gear, and catch a train. Therefore, please be on time, and ready to play so we can make the most of the time we have. Thanks!

We'll focus on Maracatu again this week, but given the fact we're not going to have an indoor space and the trouble we had with the alfaias getting flabby last time as the night cooled off, I think we should use regular surdos this week and see how that goes. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to get the Mosswood community center so that weather will be less of an issue for the alfaias. ;)

If you're not hauling your own drum and want to use something from the Lucha inventory, please meet at our house at 6:50pm to carry stuff over to the park.
