Final class before SF Carnaval! Let's make a big turn out and get the weekend started off right. ;)
This year, many members of Bateria Lucha marched with Jorge Alabe 's Grupo Samba Rio samba group and Maisa Duke's Energia do Samba in the San Francisco Carnaval 2007 Grand Parade, then played a stage show later in the afternoon.
This year, our "victory" is complicated by the fact that technically, the dancers we accompanied and the musicians were 2 separate contingents. However, in terms of the percussion, we are honored to have won 3rd place for music in the "Brazilian contingents" category! Furthermore, the dance contingent won 3rd place overall for Brazilian contingents. Congratulations to everyone who participated!
Becca's finally outta school! Let's BBQ! Bring something to eat (grill-able stuff), drink, or just chill out after Carnaval. There will be some firedancing once it gets dark, so don't be afriad to come late, though we probably won't save you any of the tasty meat or vegetables!

Jorge Alabe's Grupo Samba Rio will be performing at the SF Carnaval festival at "Stage 6" (near 22nd and Harrison). This will include our "Samba Show" (more complicated breaks and arrangements), our Samba Enredo (theme song), and dancing by Maisa Duke's Energia do Samba dance company. Hope you can all come to support us before heading off to the various after-parties. ;)
After the parade and Grupo Samba Rio's stage show, we're all invited to attend an after party at the wonderful home of Sherry and Tallulah. This is the same fantastic location where we had our after-party last year. It's officially the after party for the Maracat's maracatu contingent, but all Luchistas (and Grupo Samba Rio-ians) are welcome to attend. There will be food, beverage, relaxation, and probably quite a lot of impromptu music. It's a long walk or a very short drive from the end of the Carnaval festival where the stage show will be happening (which is also close to where we start), so if you find parking near the staging ground, it should be pretty easy to just get back to the cars and head to the party. Hope to see you there!

For those who are interested I'm organizing a group registration for Brazil Camp again this year. If we get at least 10 people to join in we get a $75 discount off the early-registration price, which works out to $675 (instead of $750 for registration by June 1, or $850 after that).
This year there are 2 weeks of camp:
Session One: August 19 to August 25
Session Two: August 26 to September 1
We don't all have to go to the same week; if you want to go to both weeks the group registration price is $1300
The way the group registration works:
- You fill out the registration form and get it (and your check for at least $375 deposit, made out to "Mameluco CBC") to me by May 28 (Memorial day = day after SF Carnaval parade) at the latest
- Registration form at: http://calbrazilcamp.com/register.html
- I send everything off to Rich in a batch
- If you pay a deposit rather than the full amount you're responsible for getting the remainder to Rich yourself (by August 1 at the latest)
- If you have questions ask me first before asking Rich
Please let me know ASAP if you're interested! This is a pretty painless way to save some $$ (which you can then spend on more drums, right?)
I've posted a lot of possible rehearsals. Please respond to them all, and we'll cancel the ones that don't work. Also let us know what drums you can bring, so we can arrange for gear.

Rehearsal at Lliam's house in Oakland. This is a last-minute addition -- can anyone come?

Jorge Alabe 's Grupo Samba Rio will be performing at the first annual Rhythmix World Music & Dance Series in Alameda.
Grupo Samba Rio, founded by master Brazilian drummer Jorge Alabe, is dedicated to playing traditional samba from Rio de Janeiro. Joining the dynamic samba drum presentation will be colorful passistas, dancers in the style of the Escolas de Samba in Rio. This exciting show also features maculelê, capoeira, and pagode, the informal samba played in the bars and backyards of Rio, and special guest musicians Beicola, Urubu, and Macarrinha.

Hi all!
While I was in Mali, I met an amazing woman who directs the Trickle Up
Mali program in Severe, Mali, West Africa. Her program is an
amazingly successful microfinance program that focuses on lifting the
poorest of the poor, mainly women, out of the cycle of poverty. The
way Trickle Up accomplishes this is by providing small business loans
to qualified candidates and augmenting the loans with trainings in
business skills, health, and education. These loans help women who
live on an averaghe of $0.52 PER DAY to conquer their poverty for
good, and the statistics show that women tend to share both their
profits and their skills with their communities, which enables the
program to help people help themselves and the community.

Looks like we don't have enough Luchistas to play. But please, come to the party anyway!
This is a combined birthday party for me and two friends (Allegra Thompson and Char Barker, for anyone who knows them). It’s a BBQ starting at 5:00 in the afternoon, in Berkeley.

A rehearsal of the Sons and Daughters of Orpheus, led by Bruce Silverman, for the Bolinas July 4th parade. All Luchistas who want to march in that parade are invited (and strongly encouraged) to come to this rehearsal.
This will be "North End of Lake Merrit, Lakeshore side (across from the movie theater), under the greek columns."
This year, in addition to the samba, and banda rhythms, he wants to add an Afro-Cuban Conga line, the idea being we as drummers and dancers will invite the crowd to join in the parade, in our Conga line!!!

This space will cost $30 for two hours. We'll ask everyone who comes to this rehearsal to chip in and split the cost. Thanks.

At long last!!!
I haven't been able to confirm the actual community center in Mosswood Park yet, but I can't stand it anymore. So, I'm going to schedule a few rehearsals anyway. If we get the community center, great. If not, we'll just do it outside (given that it's summer now, weather and light shouldn't be too much of a problem).
The plan should be to meet promptly at our house, and then carry the neccessary gear over to the park together.
I know it's a busy time with all the gigs coming up that weekend, so if we don't get quorum, I might have to cancel, so check back as this gets closer to happening.
Emphasis will be on surdos for the marches that weekend.
Maisa Duke's weekly dance class in the Mission.
UPDATE: Many folks can't actually come, and I've come down with a nasty cold. I'll be trying to rest and save my energy for the other gigs this weekend, so no Lucha at her class tonight... Sorry, -Derek.

Liza is Jim Santi Owen's partner, who is a good friend and fellow Indian music student and percussionist. Liza has been fighting against Leukemia for the past year. Jim is taking care of her full time right now, and this is a benefit to raise money for her recovery. the concert is at Tim Witter's house in West Oakland, 1561 8th street at Peralta, 12 noon to midnight. Bateria Lucha is scheduled to play from 2-3pm, so that everyone who is going has enough time to get into the city for the dyke march. Spread the word about this event! Suggested donations are $20-100 and up, NOTAFLOF.

The Dyke march is a ridiculous amount of fun, but there’s never enough music. We’ve said every year that we want to play for this event – let’s make it work this year.
Everyone is welcome at the rally, but the march is for women only. Rally in Dolores Park at 3:00. March to Market and Castro begins at 7:00.
We will meet at 6:00 in the playground, which is near the south end of the park.
Update: Here's a clip of the Lucha contingent on YouTube:

Just like last year, we've been invited to provide drums for Maisa Duke's Energia do Samba dance troupe and march with the Department of Pubic Health's contingent in the annual SF Pride Parade. A pretty big group of folks from Grupo Samba Rio are already confirmed, but the more Luchistas who want to march, the merrier. I'll be directing the Bateria, so expect the usual mix of Lucha material (with a strong emphasis on Rio-style samba). More details about the exact starting time and meeting location as soon as I get the info, but please signup now to indicate you're coming.
I'm happy to report that all Luchistas are invited to participate here, so if you were feeling left out of the Dyke march, now's your chance to still show your support for the LGBTQWXYZ community. ;)
UPDATE: Here are the details for our exact meeting time and place:
We are meeting at 10:00am.
We are contingent line-up #146 - S.F Dept of Public Health.
We are meeting on beale street between mission and howard streets at "assembly area location K".
(one block off of market. the corner of beale and market is right above the "embarcadero" underground muni/bart station.)
