We'll meet at the Bolinas Community Center to get set up for the evening and to run through everything we'll be doing for the parade and for the evening show. We'll also use this time to make sure we know who's playing which instruments, that everybody has all the straps and kneepads and mallets etc. that they need for the parade.

We'll go over

  • Samba Reggae
  • Samba Rio
  • Maracatu
  • New Orleans Second Line

We'll begin at the Bolinas Community Center with a rehearsal from 3-5 where we can go over all the drum parts and review the plan. Please sign up for that rehearsal if you can make it so we'll know who's going to be there.

It takes about 70 minutes from Berkeley to Bolinas if you know the way, the weather's decent, and you don't get stuck behind a slowpoke. Feel free to get to Bolinas early.

At 5:30 we'll set out on foot with some dancers and merrymakers for a brief parade in the town of Bolinas, in the local vicinity of the community center, "drumming up" a crowd for the evening's activities. We'll go into the bar, the grocery store, the liquor store, the post office, etc., but we probably won't make it quite all the way to the beach. If it's raining we'll have to decide on a plan B. (Unlike last year there will be no New Orleans brass band accompanying us on the parade.)

At 6:30 the doors of the Community Center officially open to the public, so around then we'll bring the parade back there, ending with a brief jam in the parking lot next to the building. We'll stop playing and I'll announce to the crowd that there's a dinner and concert for $10 right here at the community center, and encourage them to line up and start paying the admission. We drummers, on the other hand, will pay nothing, and will go inside. At this point depending on the crowd we'll either keep playing (so as to encourage them to come in and dance some more), or else take a break.
